Albanian anti-trafficking sector warns communities about false promises

On July 30th, to mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the URAT (United Response Against Trafficking) network brought together government officials, community leaders, young people and local community members in Berat.

The awareness raising activity led by the anti-trafficking network in Albania, for which Arise holds the Secretariat, aimed to expose the deceptive promises used by human traffickers in Albania and to raise awareness in the local community on where to seek help.

The awareness campaign was launched in the morning, with the opening ceremony at the city square of Berat. The ceremony gathered over 100 participants, including keynote speeches from representatives from the Municipality of Berat, the Local Prefecture, representatives from the State Police, National Coalition of Anti-trafficking Shelters, and local anti-trafficking organisations. Their speeches shed light on the challenges in combating human trafficking and noted the importance of community action.

Youth were trained to become facilitators and raise awareness of the risks of trafficking by helping vulnerable communities identify red flags and increase their knowledge of trafficking activities and strategies.

To engage community members, the URAT Network placed the UN Gift Box in the city centre of Berat, which included stories of human trafficking victims and provided information in Albanian language on how to stay safe from human trafficking and where to seek help.

United for a shared cause, local anti-trafficking organisations, institutions and the local community shared a strong message of unity. Only by staying united we can end human trafficking.
